GST Reforms to Boost Savings and Purchasing Power: Finance Minister Sitharaman

GST reforms to enhance purchasing power and contribute to the savings of the common man across the country: Finance Minister

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the upcoming Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms are expected to save the public nearly ₹2 lakh crore by lowering tax rates.

Speaking at the Outreach Programme on Next-Gen GST Reforms in Visakhapatnam, the Finance Minister outlined the benefits of the new two-slab tax structure of 5% and 18%, which will reduce the tax burden on essential and aspirational goods. She said the changes are aimed at easing costs for the poor and middle class while also boosting farmers’ incomes through lower taxes on agricultural products and modernisation-related equipment.

Sitharaman noted that Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), along with job-generating industries, will see reduced costs and greater growth opportunities. She emphasized that the reforms will enhance citizens’ purchasing power, increase household savings, and align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat and Atma Nirbhar Bharat.

The new GST structure, set to take effect from September 22, 2025, is designed to simplify the tax system and support India’s economic expansion. Calling it a “historic tax overhaul,” Sitharaman expressed confidence that the reforms will empower citizens while strengthening the nation’s economy.
