GIGA Data Centers and ABB Deliver Scalable Hybrid UPS Architecture

Case Study: GIGA Data Centers × ABB — Scalable UPS Architecture (2025)

ABB and Applied Digital accelerate AI-ready data centers

Background / Context

GIGA Data Centers, a U.S.-based colocation provider, set out to build next-generation data center infrastructure that could keep up with the surging demand for AI, cloud, and hyperscale computing. Their priority was to design a scalable and energy-efficient electrical backbone that could expand in phases while maintaining ultra-low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), a key metric for sustainable operations.

Traditional UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems often struggle with scalability. They are either oversized upfront—leading to wasted capital and inefficiencies—or they require frequent forklift upgrades that disrupt operations. GIGA needed a hybrid solution that balanced reliability, modularity, and future-proof growth.

The Challenge

  1. Scalability – GIGA’s facilities needed to grow in capacity as demand increased, without costly overprovisioning.

  2. Energy Efficiency – Maintaining ultra-low PUE to keep costs and carbon footprint down.

  3. Flexibility – Supporting both large-scale IT loads and smaller network/distribution rooms with different UPS requirements.

  4. Reliability – Ensuring uninterrupted uptime through resilient power backup architecture.

The Solution – ABB’s Hybrid UPS Approach

ABB partnered with GIGA to co-design a modular and scalable UPS architecture tailored to their roadmap. The solution combined two complementary UPS technologies:

  • TLE Series UPS (Double Conversion + Eco-Mode)

    • Acts as the main backup bridge for the large IT infrastructure.

    • Provides high efficiency (up to 99% in Eco Mode) with robust double-conversion protection.

    • Designed for large-scale workloads and continuous availability.

  • DPA Modular UPS (Decentralized Parallel Architecture)

    • Deployed in network and distribution rooms.

    • Fully modular design allows capacity to be added or swapped module by module with no downtime.

    • Simplifies scaling from a few kW to multiple MWs as demand grows.

By combining these systems, ABB created a layered power protection design that could be scaled in sync with GIGA’s phased buildout strategy.

Outcome / Results

Modular Growth Path – GIGA can scale capacity without over-investing upfront, aligning infrastructure with real demand.
Operational Efficiency – Hybrid UPS architecture helps maintain ultra-low PUE, reducing energy waste and operating costs.
Resilience – Critical workloads are protected by robust, redundant UPS systems, ensuring uptime.
Future-Proofing – Electrical design matches GIGA’s long-term capacity roadmap, minimizing disruption during expansions.

Strategic Impact

This partnership positions GIGA Data Centers as a leader in sustainable, scalable colocation services, with infrastructure that can adapt to AI-driven and cloud-native growth. For ABB, the case highlights the effectiveness of hybrid UPS strategies in modern data center design, especially as the industry shifts toward modularity and efficiency as core principles.

The GIGA × ABB case study demonstrates how modular hybrid UPS solutions enable data centers to scale smartly, optimize energy use, and deliver resilient performance in a market where capacity and efficiency are equally critical.
