GST New Rates 2025 Live Updates: Kitchen Staples, Electronics, and Cars Get Cheaper from Today

The new Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms have officially come into effect today, September 22, coinciding with the first day of Navratri. Prices of over 375 items, including kitchen staples, medicines, consumer electronics, and automobiles, will drop as reduced GST rates roll out across the country.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier announced that these reforms are expected to infuse nearly ₹2 lakh crore into the economy, giving consumers greater purchasing power.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation on Monday, described the move as the start of a “GST Bachat Utsav (savings festival),” highlighting that the reforms, coupled with income tax exemptions, would deliver a “double bonanza” for households. “On the first day of Navratri, India is taking a big step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat. From tomorrow, buying essential and everyday items will become easier and more affordable for all sections of society,” he said.
However, the reforms have sparked political debate. The Congress party accused the Prime Minister of taking “sole credit” for the amendments and argued that the changes fail to address key issues, such as states’ demand for an extension of GST compensation. The opposition dismissed the revisions as “band-aid fixes” and demanded that the government apologise for imposing GST on essential goods in the first place.
