India, US Ink 10-Year Defence Pact to Strengthen Indigenous Production and Security Cooperation

India, US sign 10-year defence pact to boost indigenous production, security

In a major boost to strategic ties, India and the United States have signed a new 10-year Defence Framework Agreement aimed at enhancing defence cooperation, indigenous production, and regional security. The pact was formalised during a meeting between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in Malaysia.

Announcing the development on X, Hegseth said, “I just met with Rajnath Singh to sign a 10-year US-India Defense Framework. This advances our defense partnership, a cornerstone for regional stability and deterrence. We’re enhancing our coordination, information sharing, and tech cooperation. Our defense ties have never been stronger.”

The newly signed framework builds on discussions initiated during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with former US President Donald Trump at the White House in February, where both leaders had identified the pact as a key priority.

The signing follows recent high-level diplomatic engagements between the two nations. On October 27, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Malaysia, where they discussed a broad spectrum of issues, including bilateral relations, regional developments, and global challenges — underscoring the deepening India-US partnership.

Earlier this year, Singh and Hegseth had finalised the details of the defence framework during a phone conversation. The Pentagon confirmed the progress in a statement issued on July 2, shortly after their call.

The talks also covered critical areas such as pending US defence sales to India, defence industrial cooperation, and joint technology development — all aligning with India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing.

A major topic of discussion was the delay in GE Aerospace’s F404 engine deliveries, which are essential for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) program. These setbacks have impacted Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL)’s delivery schedules to the Indian Air Force.

Singh urged the expedited finalisation of the proposed HAL-GE Aerospace agreement for joint production of F414 engines in India, a collaboration expected to significantly boost indigenous production capacity and reduce dependence on imports.

The new 10-year framework marks a pivotal step in advancing India-US defence cooperation, reinforcing both nations’ commitment to regional stability, innovation, and self-reliance in defence technology.
