Perplexity AI Makes Comet Browser Free in Bid to Challenge Google Chrome
Perplexity AI has officially rolled out its Comet browser worldwide — and in a bold move, the once $200-per-month tool is now completely free.

Unlike traditional browsers, Comet is designed as a full-fledged AI assistant. It can manage tabs, draft emails, shop online, and perform other tasks beyond simple web browsing. Initially launched in July for Perplexity Max subscribers, the browser drew millions to its waitlist. Now, by removing the paywall, Perplexity is aiming to accelerate adoption and position Comet as a mainstream alternative to Chrome.
The launch comes at a pivotal time. Tech giants are racing to embed AI into browsing experiences: Google integrated Gemini into Chrome last month, Anthropic introduced a browser-based agent in August, and OpenAI’s Operator debuted in January. Perplexity, meanwhile, made waves earlier this year with its $34.5 billion unsolicited bid for Chrome — a move that, while unlikely to succeed, highlighted its ambitions to disrupt the market.
Perplexity is best known for its AI-driven search engine, which combines direct answers with source links. After facing criticism from publishers over content use, the company introduced a revenue-sharing model in 2024. Through Comet Plus, it now offers premium access to content from trusted outlets such as CNN, Condé Nast, The Washington Post, Fortune, Le Monde, and Le Figaro.
Looking ahead, Perplexity has teased two major updates: a mobile version of Comet and Background Assistant, a feature that can handle multiple tasks simultaneously in the background.
By dropping the subscription fee, Perplexity is betting big on scale. The key question now: will users embrace Comet as their daily AI-powered browser, or stick with the familiar tools already built into their digital lives?
