GST 2.0 Effect: Will Laptop Prices Drop in India Next Week? Not Really

The much-discussed GST 2.0 rollout is gradually taking effect in India, with several sectors—including automobile and consumer goods passing on tax-cut benefits to buyers. Everyday essentials are also expected to become cheaper later this week.

However, the tech segment tells a different story. While many were hoping for relief on gadgets, neither smartphones nor laptops will see any price cuts.

Laptops Stay Out of GST 2.0 Benefits

Just like smartphones, laptops continue to fall under the 18% GST slab, which remains unchanged even after September 22, 2025. Despite expectations of a reduction, the GST Council has kept the tax rate intact, ensuring no cost benefits for buyers.

Industry insiders note that the government considers smartphones and laptops as “non-essential” categories, choosing instead to maintain the higher tax slab. The revenue from this 18% GST bracket also plays a key role in government collections.

Other Electronics Get Cheaper

Interestingly, the festive season could bring some joy for those eyeing big-ticket home appliances. TVs, air conditioners, and dishwashers are among the categories that will see GST rate cuts, making them more affordable in the coming weeks. So, if you’ve been planning to upgrade to a larger LED TV, waiting a little longer could help you stretch your budget further.

Smartphones Still Costly, iPhone 17 Series Highlights

On the smartphone front, there’s no respite either. The newly launched iPhone 17 series comes with higher price tags despite consumer hopes for a reduction. The base model with 256GB storage starts at ₹82,999, the iPhone Air costs nearly ₹20,000 more than the iPhone 16 Plus, and the iPhone 17 Pro is priced above ₹1,34,000 in India.

While GST 2.0 brings price relief to cars, home appliances, and daily essentials, laptops and smartphones will remain just as expensive as before.
