Google Launches AI-Powered Mood Board App ‘Mixboard’ to Take on Pinterest
Google has introduced Mixboard, an AI-driven mood board app designed to help users brainstorm, design, and visualize ideas using generative technology. Positioned as a competitor to Pinterest and other digital collage tools, the app is now available in the U.S. as a public beta via Google Labs (labs.google/mixboard). A dedicated Discord community has also been launched to gather early feedback.
Creativity with AI at the Core
Unlike traditional mood board platforms that rely on uploading or curating images, Mixboard lets users start with simple text prompts. Google’s AI then generates images, collages, and editable boards that can be refined, reimagined, or expanded with “more like this” variations. The app is powered by Google’s Nano Banana image editing model, known for producing highly realistic edits and handling complex creative tasks.
From Inspiration to Everyday Use
Mixboard is designed for a broad spectrum of creative needs, including home décor, event planning, DIY projects, branding, and design brainstorming. It also offers pre-built boards for quick inspiration. Built-in text generation allows users to craft captions and descriptions, making it useful for pitches, presentations, and social media content.
Entering a Competitive Market
The mood board space has recently surged in popularity, especially among younger users. Pinterest’s Shuffles app gained viral traction with Gen Z, while startups like Verse and Landing pushed AI-powered creative tools. Even platforms like Depop have added collage features. By blending generative AI with mood board creation, Google aims to attract creators, designers, and everyday users seeking fast, visually engaging inspiration.
