Skyroot Aerospace to Launch India’s First Private Commercial Rocket by January 2026: Report
India is gearing up for a historic moment in its space journey, as Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace prepares to launch the country’s first private commercial rocket by January 2026
The upcoming launch marks a pivotal milestone for India’s rapidly expanding private space sector, which until now has relied solely on the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for satellite launches.
Founded in 2018 by two former ISRO scientists, Skyroot Aerospace has quickly emerged as a frontrunner in India’s private space race. The company, backed by major global investors such as Temasek and GIC plans to conduct one satellite launch every three months in 2026, and ramp up to monthly launches by 2027.
“Building a single rocket currently takes around eight to nine months and costs between $2–3 million,” said Pawan Chandana, CEO of Skyroot Aerospace. “We expect to earn about double that amount per launch, or roughly $5 million.”
Each mission will carry both domestic and international payloads, helping Skyroot tap into the global demand for small satellite launches, a market currently dominated by providers like SpaceX.
Skyroot has so far raised $95.5 million (₹850 crore) in funding and made history in November 2022 by becoming the first Indian private company to successfully launch a rocket—the Vikram-S suborbital vehicle.
While profitability is expected only by March 2028, Chandana noted that supply-chain and engineering challenges are being actively addressed.
With over 200 space startups now operating in India and the Department of Space projecting the industry to reach $44 billion by 2033, Skyroot’s upcoming launch represents a defining leap, ushering India into a new era of commercial space exploration and positioning it as a competitive global launch hub.
