OpenAI’s ChatGPT now lets you branch conversations into multiple threads: Here’s how to use it

OpenAI has launched a new ChatGPT feature that allows users to branch their conversations into multiple parallel threads, making it easier to experiment with different tones, styles, and approaches without losing the original context.

Announced on Friday, September 5, the update works like creating a duplicate of an ongoing ChatGPT conversation. For example, a marketing team brainstorming ad copies can branch the chat into separate threads—one formal, one informal, and another humorous—while preserving the original responses.

Until now, ChatGPT users had to either overwrite existing chats or start fresh conversations to test different directions. With branching, they can explore what-if scenarios more efficiently.

A user on X (formerly Twitter), who identified as a software engineer, summed it up: “Sometimes I want to pursue multiple possible branches to a conversation without muddying the original chat. This feature finally makes that possible.”

How to Use ChatGPT Branching

The branching feature is available to all ChatGPT users on the web version. Here’s how it works:

  1. Hover over any message in your ChatGPT conversation.

  2. Click on ‘More Actions’.

  3. Select ‘Branch in new chat’.

This instantly creates a new thread that includes all the context up to the branching point, while leaving the original chat untouched.

Many users have already compared the feature to Git branching in programming, where developers test new changes without disrupting the main codebase.

Research supports the move: a 2024 study found that traditional linear dialogue in large language models (LLMs) can increase cognitive load, forcing users to repeatedly compare or copy content. Branching offers a more structured way to handle layered tasks like brainstorming, project planning, and structured learning.

The update comes alongside OpenAI’s broader push to expand ChatGPT’s usefulness. Recently, the company revealed plans for an AI-powered jobs platform to rival LinkedIn, working with partners such as John Deere, Walmart, Accenture, BCG, and community organizations to match talent with opportunities more effectively.
