7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Russia’s Kamchatka, Tsunami Warning Issued

Moscow | Sept 19, 2025 – A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale shook Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka peninsula early Friday, prompting a tsunami alert for nearby coastal areas.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred 128 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, amplifying its intensity. Russia’s state geophysical service, however, reported a slightly lower magnitude of 7.4 and confirmed at least five aftershocks.
Footage circulating on Russian social media showed furniture, light fixtures, and parked vehicles swaying as the tremors rippled across the region.
Regional governor Vladimir Solodov urged residents to remain calm while confirming that no damage or casualties have been reported so far. “A tsunami warning has been issued for the eastern coast of Kamchatka, and the public is being alerted,” he said in a Telegram post.
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of potential hazardous waves along nearby coastlines.
Kamchatka, located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is one of the world’s most seismically active zones. Just two months ago, the region was struck by a massive 8.8-magnitude quake, which triggered a tsunami that swept part of a coastal village into the sea.
